Gene Nichol is a disturber, a rabble-rouser, an outspoken fighter for equity, and fairness, and a fearless fighter for progressive values. A participant in Moral Mondays, the UNC BOG shut down his Poverty Center to stop his work. Shortly after, the UNC law school launched the North Carolina Poverty Research Fund, which continues to provide a platform for Nichol.  In 2020 he released, Indecent Assembly: The North Carolina Legislature’s Blueprint for the War on Democracy and Equality, exposing the state’s all-white Republican legislative caucuses and their political agenda hostile to the poor, people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ people. In 2023 he published Lessons From North Carolina: Race, Religion, Tribe and the Future of America.

 

 

Keith Busby  Keith is one of 2 District Leads responsible for the 9 states in CWA District 3. Keith has worked on multiple projects related to Broadband improvement for the state of NC. He was the Project Manager for a CWA/Microsoft Joint Project for the  ACP Program (Affordable Connectivity Program) to help make Broadband affordable to those in need in NC. Keith has also worked with the NCDIT to help close the Digital Equity Divide. Recently Keith has been appointed to the North Carolina Department  of Information Technology (NCDIT) Labor Task Force.  To help NCDIT  deal with labor shortages as the state begins to roll out its Broadband improvement program. As a member of the CWA Legislative-Political Team, Keith has worked to establish relationships with elected officials from State, Federal, and Local Government. Keith is a 24-year member of CWA.

 

 

Grant Welch is CWA NC Legislative-Political Director and Vice President NC AFL-CIO. Grant leads the NC legislative team in the fight for all workers across the state. As a registered lobbyist for CWA, he and the team have introduced and lobbied multiple bills to keep our call center worker jobs in NC, expand access to affordable, high-speed broadband, increase wages and benefits to working people, maintain collective bargaining provisions, fight against right to work laws, and repeal the ban on public sector bargaining. The NC legislative team has built relationships with elected officials and candidates on both sides of the aisle, from national to local government. Grant is a 25-year member of CWA.
